DBS PLI Assessment Test

The PLI Test, formally known as PI Cognitive Assessment, is designed to evaluate your general cognitive capability, which involves processing and implementing complex information, adapting, reasoning, analyzing, planning, and problem-solving.

Question types on the DBS PLI test are, therefore, divided into three broad categories. Each of these categories is composed of three subcategories.

The PLI thus assesses job applicants’ nine cognitive abilities, as shown in the table below:

Sub-Category

Category

1. Analogies 2. Antonyms

3. Verbal Analysis

Verbal

4. Number Series 5. Math Problems 6. Number Values

Numerical

7. Visual Analogies 8. Visual Series 9. Common Features

Abstract Reasoning

The format of the PLI test is simple. Aiming to evaluate candidates’ specific areas of reasoning rather than their acquired knowledge, the test contains only common words and expressions that are neither ambiguous nor confusing.

It consists of 50 questions, equally distributed among the nine categories, and takes only 12 minutes to complete. Questions are of varying difficulty.

Yet the real challenge you face on the PLI test is not the difficulty of the questions but the short time-limit allowed for answering them. You have only 14.4 seconds to think over each question.

So, to excel on the DBS test and shoot ahead of other candidates you should at least try a few dry runs with our free sample questions or commit to your preparation by investing the full practice pack.

Practicing beforehand will increase your confidence and score during the real examination.

Sample Questions

Math Word Problems

The total cost of an electric bill is $318.00. If 6% tax, which is added to the cost of the electricity, is included in the $318.00, how much did the electricity cost before tax?

Explanation:

The bill was for $318 including a 6% tax. Notice that a 6% is added to the net cost - that is, the tax is not 6% of 318, but 318 is 106% of the electricity cost, meaning 318 is (106/100)= 1.06 times the net electricity cost.
In order to isolate electricity, we will divide each side by 1.06.

That means that
Electricity×1.06=318

318÷1.06=
(318÷106)×100=
3×100=
300

Solving tip
Before trying to solve the question, it may be helpful to first look at the answer choices. Notice that according to answer A the price without tax ($337.08) is higher than the price with tax ($318). Since this cannot be, answer A can be eliminated.
According to answer B the price without tax ($19.02) is almost $300 less than the price with tax ($318). We know that 6% of 19.02 cannot be anywhere near 298.92 and we can therefore eliminate answer B.

The two remaining answer choices are very close together, $298.92 and $300. Instead of dividing 318/1.06, we can multiply one of these two answer choices by 1.06 and see if we get 318.
We will check 300, as it is a much more comfortable number to work with.
300×1.06
=(3×100)×(106÷100)
=3×106
=3×100+ 3×6
=300+18=
318

300 is therefore the correct answer. Notice that if we would have first multiplied 298.92×1.06 we would have gotten 316.8552. We could have then eliminated answer D and concluded answer C was the correct answer without checking it.
Hence, the correct answer is C.

Vocabulary - Antonyms

PERTINENT is the opposite of...

Error loading Partial View script (file: ~/Views/MacroPartials/AnswerQuestionBR.cshtml)

Explanation:

PERTINENT means "relating directly and significantly to the matter at hand," so the antonym is irrelevant.

URGENT is a synonym.

CONGENIAL is not related.

Therefore, the correct answer is IRRELEVANT.

Number Series

What is the next in the following series?:

-10 | -5 | -9 | -4 | -8 | -3 | ?

Error loading Partial View script (file: ~/Views/MacroPartials/AnswerQuestionBR.cshtml)
Explanation:

-10 | -5 | -9 | -4 | -8 | -3 | -7
+5 | -4 | +5 | -4 | +5 | -4
This can also be seen as two series intertwined, where the odd and even terms are decreased by -1.

Odd terms:
-10 | -9 | -8 | -7
-1 | -1 | -1

Even terms:
-5 | -4 | -3
-1 | -1

Therefore, the correct answer is -7.

Logical Reasoning - Syllogism

FACTS: A street has 5 houses arranged from left to right (1-2-3-4-5). Each house has a unique characteristic. One house has a gate to the front yard. The house with the front porch is not house #4. The leftmost house does not have a blue door. The house with the garden is immediate to the left of the house with the wide driveway. The house with the gate to the front yard is two houses to the right of the house with the front porch and one house to the left of the house with the garden.

CONCLUSION: House 2 has the front porch.

Which of the following statement is correct?:

Error loading Partial View script (file: ~/Views/MacroPartials/AnswerQuestionBR.cshtml)
Explanation:

If the house with the gate to the front yard is two houses to the right of the house with the front porch, then the house with the gate to the front yard can only be house 3, 4 or 5. If the house with the gate to the front yard is also one house to the left of the house with the garden, then the house with the gate to the front yard can only be house 3 or 4 and the house with the garden is house 4 or 5. If the house with the garden is immediately to the left of the house with the wide driveway, then the house with the garden must be house 4. Therefore, the house with the gate to the front yard is house 3 and the house with the wide driveway is house 5. If the leftmost house does not have the blue door, then house 2 must have the blue door which means it does not have the front porch. House 1 has the front porch.
Therefore, option B is correct.

Formal Logic

People with mental problems can lead normative lives thanks to pharmaceuticals. Before these drugs were available, people with mental problems usually ended up in an asylum somewhere. While there, if they received any ‘treatment’ at all, they mainly received electroshock therapy and lobotomies.

Now, with the help of modern medicine, these people can instead lead relatively normal lives. However, most of these modern drugs have side effects, including, but not limited to, nausea, drowsiness, and weight gain.

If the conclusion does follow, select ‘1’ . If the conclusion does follow, select ‘2’.

Questions 1 2
A) Electroshock therapy was not an effective way to treat people with mental problems.
B) While modern medicine enables people with mental problems to live more normal lives, people with mental problems can still suffer from the side effects associated with the drugs used for treatment.
C) Only people with mental health problems suffer from weight gain.
D) Suffering from nausea, drowsiness, and weight gain is better than either electroshock therapy or a lobotomy.
E) It would be better to be in an asylum than suffer from the side effects of modern drugs.
Explanation:

(A) The correct answer is 1. Sentence 3 states that electroshock therapy was a form of ‘treatment’. The word ‘treatment’ is enclosed in quotation marks, which implies that this form of treatment was not a very good one.

(B) The correct answer is 1. Sentence 1 states that people with mental problems can lead more normal lives thanks to modern drugs. Sentence 5 states that these drugs have side-effects. Thus, modern medicine allows people with mental health problems to lead more normal lives, but they can still suffer from the side effects of the drugs used for treatment.

(C) The correct answer is 2. Sentence 5 states that one of the side effects of modern drugs used to treat people with mental health problems is weight gain. However, no information is provided about whether anyone not taking these drugs, such as a person with no mental health problems at all, can also suffer from weight gain for reasons other than consumption of these drugs.

(D) The correct answer is 1. Sentence 3 states that both electroshock therapy and lobotomies were forms of ‘treatment’. The word ‘treatment’ is enclosed in quotation marks, which implies that these forms of treatment were not very good. Sentence 4 states that with the help of modern medicine people with mental health problems can lead more normal lives. Sentence 5 states that there are side effects related to the use of these drugs. Thus, suffering from the side effects of modern drugs is better than the alternative.

(E) The correct answer is 2. Thus, suffering from the side effects of modern drugs is better than being in an asylum.

DBS Interview Questions

If you PI test score high enough on your PLI test to be invited for the second round, you will have an interview with the DBS representatives.

Most of the questions posed at the DBS interview are personal and competency-based.

If you are applying for such positions as a banker or software engineer, however, interviewers might ask you professional or technical questions, including advanced Java and SQL queries.

You might also be required to express your opinion about possible management of NPAs, sort an algorithm linked list, or design an application that will interact with different systems.

Some examples of the DBS interview questions are as follows:

  • Why are you interested in working at the Development Bank of Singapore?
  • What do you want to get out of your working experience at the DBS?

  • What is the difference between the ArrayList and LinkedList?
  • When will you use Hibernate ORM, iBatis, and TopLink JPA?
  • When is an object considered immutable and what codes do you create with immutable objects?

To produce a lasting impression on your interviewers and land the job, get ready to answer technical questions correctly. You should also make sure to familiarize yourself with the DBS and its mission.
