What is The United Airlines Aviate Program?

United Airlines aims to hire more than 10,000 pilots in the current decade, and for this purpose has opened a training program to help train aspiring flight students as well as commercial pilots as first officers.

The assessment process includes applying to the program through your relevant entry point, initial screening based solely on your application, Leadership Inventory & Becoming United assessments, and finally a panel interview and technical assessment.

 

1. Leadership Inventory

This section assesses your leadership ability for possible supervisory and managerial positions within the organization in the future.

The different questions will assess your adaptability, confidence, and other attributes to find out if you have what it takes to be a pilot.

 

2. Becoming United

This virtual job tryout (or VJT) includes a mix of personality test questions with a situational judgement test.

For the personality test, you will be asked to rate which of two opposing statements are most representative of your personality.

Note that even though personality tests will ask you to "answer honestly" or "act naturally", they are a screening tool. Accurate preparation can improve your test scores, even for personality tests.

For the situational judgement test, you will be asked to choose the most appropriate response to a workplace situation. These situations are not always flight related, but are there to find out your teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills.

 

3. United Panel Interview

This interview can include several questions, all intended to find out if you are the type of person United Airlines is looking for in a pilot. Some common questions include:

  • What made you interested in an aviation career?
  • Why do you want to work for United Airlines?
  • Give an example of a time you handled a problem creatively.
  • Give an example of when you had to work hard over a long period to achieve your goals. How did you keep yourself committed?

 

4. Technical Assessment

This section includes questions directly related to the pilot profession. The level of knowledge expected of the candidate is dependent on their level of experience and entry point.

Questions require flight-related calculations, regulations, and knowledge of terminology.

Aviate Academy Requirements

  • At least 18 years old
  • US citizenship/legal permanent residency
  • High School Diploma/GED equivalent

 

Aviate Academy Entry Points

1. University: With a private pilot certificate, a student/bachelor's degree holder from a four-year university who are/will be eligible for an R-ATP certification is eligible.

2. Professional Flight Training: With a private pilot certificate and current pursuit of/possession of commercial pilot certificate and ratings from/at participating professional flight schools are eligible.

3. Experience-Build: By serving as a CFI at a participating University, flight school or serving as a commercial pilot at a participating Part 135 operator while building hours towards an ATP or R-ATP, candidates become eligible.

4. UAX: By being employed as a pilot at participating United Express carriers, candidates become eligible.

5. United Aviate Family Programs: Active/furloughed United employees, those dependant on an active/furloughed United employee and former United Flight Operations Professional Pilot Interns who successfully completed their internship are all eligible.
