Numerosity

HireVue's most popular game tests your mathematical skills and time management skills.

Each time, you will be presented with a number and a mathematical operation. There will be several other numbers below that are supposed to result in the number presented when the math operation is applied. There is a time limit of 3 minutes for this game, during which you must complete as many phases as possible.

Here is an example (taken from the HireVue game preparation course):

numerocity

Expert's Tip: For Numerosity on HireVue, an effective strategy is to quickly estimate and use approximation to narrow down your choices, especially when dealing with larger numbers or fractions. Keep an eye on the magnitude and scale of the numbers presented: exclude significantly smaller numbers immediately for large sums or products; pay attention to the relative sizes of the options for division and subtraction.

When faced with a 3-minute time limit, this approach allows you to eliminate improbable answers quickly, conserving precious time and improving your chance of selecting the right numbers. Check out our HireVue Games Prep Course for more tips like this and interactive practice games that simulate the real assessment.

Flashback

Flashback is another HireVue game that tests your working memory and visual processing abilities.

As you play the Flashback game, you need to determine if the shape displayed now matches the shape displayed earlier. In this test, the shape will change rapidly from step to step to assess your reactions on time. As many phases as possible must be completed within 3 minutes.

For advanced levels, you'll be asked to recall a shape with two colors and compare it to a shape that was shown two (or more) steps back.

Let's see what it looks like (Taken from our HireVue game prep course):

flashbackב

Expert's Tip: In the Flashback game on HireVue, which tests your working memory and ability to process visual information through quick-changing shapes, mastering a mental "snapshot" method is crucial. This entails momentarily committing to memory the essential characteristics of each shape, like its borders, corners, and color layout, to form a clear mental picture.

As the game's difficulty level rises, especially when you need to recall shapes from several steps earlier, try linking each shape with a basic mental label or keyword that summarizes its main feature, enabling faster memory retrieval and comparison within the tight 3-minute deadline.

This technique helps not only in remembering the distinct details of each shape but also in quickly accessing this information as the tasks become more complex. Shapedance

The Shapdance game, another component of the HireVue gaming suite, is designed to test your working memory, attention to detail, and visual processing abilities. You have a 3-minute window to solve as many puzzles as possible.

In each round, you'll be shown a series of cubes, each with objects arranged in a specific pattern. Your challenge is to identify the two cubes that display identical patterns.

As you advance through the game, the difficulty escalates. The patterns grow more intricate with additional details, and the cubes may either rotate or move, adding to the complexity of the task.

Let's see what it looks like (Taken from our HireVue game prep course):

shapedance

Expert's tip: In the Shapdance game on HireVue, where the challenge is to find matching patterns among cubes that may rotate or move, honing your working memory and attention to detail, it's wise to zero in on the patterns' unique or standout features. Begin by identifying any peculiar shapes, colors, or arrangements that catch your eye, as these can act as quick markers for cube comparison.

With the introduction of movement and increasingly complex patterns, mentally "tag" each cube with a notable characteristic to ease the comparison task, even as the cubes turn or shift. This tactic not only makes it easier to recognize patterns swiftly within the tight 3-minute limit but also aids in keeping your accuracy high as the game's complexity escalates. Singularity

The Singularity game, part of the HireVue gaming suite, is designed to evaluate your working memory, attention to detail, and visual processing capabilities.

In each round, you'll be faced with an array of shapes on your screen. Your objective is to swiftly review these shapes and pinpoint the one that is unique. You're given a 3-minute timeframe to progress through as many levels of the game as possible.

With each level you clear, the game's difficulty will escalate, introducing more complex challenges. You'll encounter shapes that are rotated, and in motion, and an increased number of shapes to examine. It's important to remember that a shape's rotation does not qualify it as unique; the uniqueness must be inherent to the shape's form, color, and specific details.

Expert's Tip: In the Singularity game on HireVue, where the task is to spot the unique shape among many, a key tactic is to quickly sort the shapes by noticeable features such as color, size, or basic shapes (like circles and squares). As the game advances, introducing a greater number of shapes, rotations, and movements, it's crucial to stick to a systematic scanning method, such as moving from left to right and top to bottom, to ensure every shape is accounted for.

Keep in mind that a shape's rotation doesn't make it unique; the focus should be on inherent characteristics like the details of the shape, variations in color, and other distinct features. This structured approach to scanning and categorizing aids in navigating the increasing complexity and staying accurate within the limited 3-minute period.  Digitspan

Digitspan is a game featured in HireVue's suite, aimed at evaluating your working memory and attention abilities. With a 3-minute time cap, your goal is to answer as many questions as you can within this interval.

During the game, you'll be presented with a series of numbers or letters for a brief moment. Your challenge is to memorize and then recall this sequence accurately.

As you progress, the game intensifies in difficulty. The sequences will lengthen and include more numbers or letters, and you'll be required to recall them in a modified order, such as from the beginning to the end, adding a layer of complexity to the task.

Expert's Tip: In the Digitspan game on HireVue, where you're challenged to remember and recall sequences of numbers or letters, an effective tactic is "chunking." This method involves dividing the sequence into smaller, more digestible groups. For instance, if you're given a sequence like "572849", you could break it down into "572-849".

As the sequences become lengthier and more intricate, consider using mnemonic aids or linking them to familiar patterns, such as phone numbers or dates. When required to recall the sequences in a new order, think of the sequence as laid out on a physical object, like the digits on a keypad or letters on a keyboard, to aid in mentally rearranging them as needed.

Applying chunking and visualization not only aids in memorizing the sequences but also in adjusting them within the tight 3-minute limit, particularly as the sequences become more complex. E-motions

E-motions is a game by HireVue designed to gauge your emotional intelligence and your skill in identifying emotions in others. You have four minutes to respond to as many questions as you can.

In each round, you'll be shown a photo of an individual alongside a list of potential emotions. Your task is to discern which emotion the person in the image is displaying.

Expert's Tip: In the E-motions game on HireVue, aimed at evaluating emotional intelligence through the identification of emotions in images, a practical approach is to concentrate on significant facial expressions and gestures linked with particular emotions.

Focus especially on the eyes and mouth, as these facial features typically convey a lot of emotional information. For instance, joy is often expressed with crinkled eyes and a broad smile, whereas anger might be depicted with squinted eyes and a clenched jaw.

Given the four-minute time frame, briefly study each image but avoid spending too much time on any single one. Preparing with diverse resources on emotional expressions can also be helpful, enabling you to swiftly and precisely match specific expressions and body language to their corresponding emotions, thereby enhancing your efficiency and precision in the game. For additional strategies and a suite of interactive practice games that mirror the actual test, visit our comprehensive HireVue Games Prep Course.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder is a HireVue game aimed at evaluating your problem-solving abilities, visual orientation, and perception skills. You have a 5-minute window to tackle as many questions as you can.

In each challenge, you'll be presented with several boxes that, when correctly arranged, should form a continuous road. These boxes will be in a jumbled order, and your job is to rearrange them to construct a connected pathway.

Expert's Tip: In the Pathfinder game on HireVue, where your task is to reorganize scrambled boxes into a coherent pathway, a useful strategy is to first spot key pieces with distinctive attributes, like endpoints or corners. These elements often offer a solid start or finish for your path. Then, search for boxes featuring straight lines or gentle curves, as these tend to connect more easily once you've established the key pieces. Bear in mind the intended shape of the path you're creating, be it straight, circular, or another form, to help in positioning the middle pieces.

Adopting a methodical approach, possibly working from one end to the next, is crucial for staying organized and efficient, particularly with the 5-minute limit to solve as many puzzles as possible. This method helps quickly form a basic structure for the pathway, minimizing time lost in trial and error as the puzzles grow more complex. Puzzlepicture

HireVue's Puzzlepicture test assesses your problem-solving skills as well as your working memory skills. You'll have 7 minutes to answer.

It will be necessary for you to memorize for a short period of time an image presented to you. You will then be presented with a similar picture, now divided into several cubes that are arranged in a mixed order. In order to solve the puzzle, you will need to reorder the cubes so that the picture will appear in the correct order.

Expert's Tip: In the Puzzlepicture test on HireVue, where you need to memorize an image and then reorder mixed-up cubes to reconstruct that image, a key strategy is to focus on distinctive landmarks or features in the original picture during the memorization phase. These could be unique colors, shapes, or any notable elements that stand out. When you're presented with the mixed cubes, start by identifying these key features to anchor your reconstruction, placing these pieces in their relative positions first.

This approach not only aids in quickly forming a coherent section of the puzzle but also serves as a guide for placing the less distinctive pieces. Given the seven-minute time limit, it's crucial to balance speed with accuracy, working methodically from the established anchors outward to efficiently complete the puzzle while minimizing the need for corrections as the complexity of the images increases. For more tips like this and many interactive practice games that simulate the real assessment, check our full HireVue Games Prep Course.

Portrait

HireVue's Portrait test is designed to evaluate your work-style preferences and personality characteristics. You are allotted 5 minutes to respond to approximately 50 questions.

In each question, you'll be presented with two images that encapsulate certain traits and behaviors, sometimes accompanied by a brief verbal description beneath each image. Your task is to select the image that you feel best represents your own characteristics and behavior.

Expert's Tip: In the Portrait test on HireVue, aimed at matching you with suitable work-style preferences and personality traits, a smart tactic is to first understand the attributes that are generally appreciated in the role or sector you are pursuing.

Before taking the test, do some homework on the company and the specific job to grasp the profile of the ideal candidate, which might emphasize qualities such as teamwork, leadership, creativity, or meticulousness. When faced with the choice between images and their descriptions during the test, opt for the options that best mirror these sought-after traits, while also considering the scenarios depicted in the images and any related text.

This approach helps you tailor your answers to highlight your alignment with the job's demands and the organizational culture, thereby improving your chances within the limited 5-minute window to finish the test.  Let's see what it looks like:

portaitxt

Expert's Tip: In tackling the PortraitXT test on HireVue, which evaluates work-style preferences and personality traits through a range of statements to be rated from "Strongly Disagree" to "Strongly Agree", a thoughtful approach is key. Begin by gaining a deep understanding of the skills and qualities that are highly regarded in the specific role and industry you're targeting.

Prior to the test, take the time to research what the employer values in candidates for the role. During the test, consider how each statement relates to these valued traits and tailor your responses to reflect these. It's important to remain consistent in your answers to statements that are similar to present a coherent picture of your professional persona. Additionally, keep an eye on the clock to ensure you can thoughtfully respond to all items within the 5-minute timeframe, presenting a well-rounded portrayal of your fit for the position and the desired image you want to project.
